letsgetsocialinfo, do you really think its wise to hold someone from the 15th century to today's standard? You'd have to just wipe out history if do that. Also, their were warring tribes in America slaughtering each other long before Europeans got here. So, by your logic we can't celebrate indigenous peoples day either. You've been taught a Marxist version of history that lacks context, a version of history that deliberately oversimplifies and distorts history to push an agenda. History is very complex and very bloody. If you want a real history lesson, John Taylor Gatto is great. Also, I highly recommend the Tragedy and Hope Mag Channel hosted by Richard Grove. But, to learn about the America's during Columbus days, no one comes to mind. Just search for warring or savage native American Indians tribes, you'll find a lot. For example, the Comanche Indians were conquering and slaughters like nobodies business before Europeans got here. By the way, Europeans didn't just slaughter peace pipe smoking native American Indians, the native American Indians fought the Europeans for about 400 years, that was a long and bloody war. Also, in America they gave land to native Indians, any other culture in the world would of just killed them all. I can tell you know very little about history, you should look up the Islamic slave trade. You should look at how brutal cultures outside of western civilization were. You're one of those people who think the civil war was about slavery aren't you? Did you know only the top 2% of richest Americans owned slaves? Do you know about any of the atrocities committed by the north? How about when the northern army burnt down Atlanta killing tens thousands of both black and white families. The average Southern soldier didn't fight so the richest men in America could keep their slaves, they fought in self defense of their homeland and families. Again, history is very complex and bloody. Do your homework, don't be any bodies pawn, you've got the O'reilly types that push a version of history called romantic nationalism to make people hyper patriotic which is terrible and dishonest and then you got the Marxist version of history to make people anti patriotic which is just as bad and dishonest. You've got to challenge the information you consume and your own thinking to grow intellectually and to be a true student of history because most people aren't giving it to you straight. Not in the public schools or universities. Knowledge is power. People always want to control the narrative of history to influence other on how they see the world. You have to do some digging for yourself, take my advice, its a real eye opener. You'll be glad you did. Again, history is very bloody and very complex. The world wasn't civilized like it is today in the West for very long, this is new, most of history is barbaric.

A PROCLAMATION
Five hundred and twenty-five years ago, Christopher Columbus completed an ambitious and daring voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. The voyage was a remarkable and then-unparalleled feat that helped launch the age of exploration and discovery. The permanent arrival of Europeans to the Americas was a transformative event that undeniably and fundamentally changed the course of human history and set the stage for the development of our great Nation. Therefore, on Columbus Day, we honor the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents and has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams and convictions -- even in the face of extreme doubt and tremendous adversity.
More than five centuries after his initial voyage, we remember the "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" for building the critical first link in the strong and enduring bond between the United States and Europe. While Isabella I and Ferdinand II of Spain sponsored his historic voyage, Columbus was a native of the City of Genoa, in present day Italy, and represents the rich history of important Italian American contributions to our great Nation. There can be no doubt that American culture, business, and civic life would all be much less vibrant in the absence of the Italian American community. We also take this opportunity to reaffirm our close ties to Columbus's country of birth, Italy. Italy is a strong ally and a valued partner in promoting peace and promoting prosperity around the world.
In commemoration of Christopher Columbus's historic voyage, the Congress, by joint resolution of April 30, 1934, and modified in 1968 (36 U.S.C. 107), as amended, has requested the President proclaim the second Monday of October of each year as "Columbus Day."
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2017, as Columbus Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and all who have contributed to shaping this Nation.
