Aretha Franklin was from the generation that had to have the skills or they wouldn't get a record deal. Nowadays, image is what's important and actual talent seems to be an afterthought. I don't think artists like Aretha Franklin, Al Green or most of the big rock bands from the 60s and 70s would make it today in our style over substance society.
