In his book The Illuminati: Facts & Fiction author Mark Dice writes:

It is impossible not to see striking similarities between the goals of the Bavarian Illuminati and those of Skull and Bones. Skull and Bones was founded in 1832 by William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft. Russell had returned from a trip to Germany immediately preceding his creation of Skull and Bones. This was also a short period of time after Adam Weishaupt had created the Illuminati in Germany, and it is no stretch of the imagination to think that Russell was granted permission and given instructions on how to expand the Illuminati in America. Many admit that this was in fact the case. Another piece of evidence supporting this is that members of File and Claw society who broke into the Skull and Bones headquarters in 1876 reported that they saw a card placed in a frame and hung on a wall which read, "From the German Chapter. Presented by Patriarch D.C. Gilman of D. 50."
Although what is known officially as the Order of the Illuminati did not come into being until at least the 1700s, the word "Illuminati has origins that date back to at least the 1400s. In Spain, at the time, those who immersed themselves in the world of the black arts identified occultists, alchemists, and witches as having been given the "the light." We're talking about nothing less than a supernatural form of "illumination" which gave them extraordinary powers, hence the term, "Illuminati."...
The Jeremiah Project says: "Many believe the Illuminati are the master minds behind events that will lead to the establishment of such a New World Order, and see connections between the Illuminati, Freemasonry, the Trilateral Commission, British Imperialism, International Zionism, and communism that all lead back to a bid for world domination...
"It is difficult to uncover the facts regarding the modern day role of the Illuminati as most information is cloaked in secrecy. What we must do instead is to look at the available evidence and relationships in the context of contemporary world events, and form some common sense conclusions based on that inquiry."
The Jeremiah Project also notes: The Illuminati was presumed to have been dispersed by the end of the century but some people such as David Icke, Ryan Burke and Morgan Gricar, have argued that the Bavarian Illuminati survived and believe that Illuminati members chose instead to conceal themselves and their plans within the cloak of Freemasonry, under which auspices they continue to thrive.
